Unpacking the Common Core Standards

What is unpacking a Standard, you say?  In order to understand what is contained within a Common Core State Standard, it must be unpacked, or taken apart.  Really, it's all about the verbs and nouns
and identifying the skills.

For example:  2.MD.7  Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m.  To unpack:
1.  Identify the verbs - tell, write
2.  Identify the nouns - time, analog clocks, digital clock, 5 minutes, a.m., p.m.
3.  Identify skills needed
          - define possible unknown words/terms - analog, digital, a.m., p.m.
-tell time to the hour and 1/2 hour
           -count by 5's
           -write time in correct formats.

Unpacking each and every Common Core State Standard is time-consuming, but,  I think, well worth the effort.  It helps us understand the concepts to be taught and skills students need.  We can, then, present the Big Idea in student-friendly language and ask the Essential Questions that will engage students.

In the development of my Common Core Morning Work series Grad 2, I have attempted to "Unpack the Standards" in a simplistic way.   I've tried to lay out the concepts step-by-step, yet as simple as possible in a small space.  I'm so excited that Unit 5 is finally ready to go!  I have only one more unit left to complete in this series. It's getting harder and takes more time, but I think it's worth it.  These units have daily sentences, not just the common fix-it type of sentences, but in-depth editing, grammar, phonics, spelling, and sentence structure.  But, wait, that's not all, the math portion covers all Common Core State Standards Unpacked with step-by-step guidance within.  Take a look.  I think you'll like it!
